Mission 300: Powering Africa's Future
In 2024, the African Development Bank and the World
Bank launched Mission 300 at the Africa Energy Summit
in Dar es Salaam. An ambitious initiative aimed at
connecting 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.
The AfDB committed to 50 million connections and the
World Bank pledged 250 million, to the project. The
transformative program has also secured commitments
from twelve African nations including Nigeria, Senegal,
and Tanzania. The Dar es Salaam Declaration on
Energy, requires comprehensive power sector reforms
and utility restructuring with strong coordination
between governments, power pools, and international
partners. Mission 300 promises to improve the lives of
millions of Africans currently without electricity access,
while addressing climate resilience objectives and
advancing regional decarbonization goals, with more
nations expected to join following the declaration's
adoption at the African Union Summit.
The Future: Connected, Integrated, Sustainable
As Africa moves forward, regional power interconnections
will serve as the backbone of both economic integration
and environmental sustainability. The path forward
requires proper alignment of the Bank's regional operations
with REC and Power Pool priorities, support for Least
Cost Integrated Power Sector Planning, and increased
focus on measuring actual results against projections.
With the right investments and policies, Africa can transform
its energy paradox into a unique advantage.
By connecting energy-rich regions with energy-hungry
communities through cross-border power infrastructure,
Africa is writing a new chapter in its development story.
The power lines stretching across national borders carry
more than electricity—they transmit opportunity, stability,
and hope for a more integrated, prosperous, and
sustainable continent.
In this vision of the future, the lights shining in previously
darkened homes and businesses across Africa will
illuminate not just local communities, but a new path of
